Anjdiv Fort is located on the border of Goa and Karnataka, making it a valuable gem of Goa. It was built by the Portuguese in 1505 AD and is also known as Anjediva and Anjadiva. The fort covers a vast area of 1.5 square kilometers and is known for its majestic and splendid architecture.

Anjdiv Fort Goa
The Anjdiv fort is situated on Anjdiv island , located on the border of Goa and Karnataka. The island is also known by other names such as Anjadiva or Anjediva, originating from the Sanskrit term Anjani Dweep, which means Fifth Island. It spans an area of 1.5 square kilometers and is positioned near Binaga village close to Karwar.
Constructed by the Portuguese in 1505 A.D. the fort is relatively small and includes a church . Originally this church was believed to be the temple of Aryadurga in ancient times but it was later converted into a church. The construction of the fort caused concerns for the Sultan of Bijapur, Adilshah & leading to an unsuccessful attack on the island fort.
Despite subsequent attempts by Shivaji’s son Sambhaji, the Peshavas and Haidar the fort’s robust natural defenses proved insurmountable.
During the Goa Freedom Movement the fort gained historical significance as it became the first part of Goa to be liberated by Indian forces on December 18 1961 in an operation known as Operation Vijay.
Currently the island serves as a naval base encompassing its surroundings. There are plans to eventually station the carrier fleet led by INS Vikramaditya expected to arrive in early 2013 at this base. The naval base is undergoing rapid modernization to accommodate the western carrier battle group. Consequently, due to its militarized status the fort and the island are not easily accessible to the general public.
