The Corjuem Fortress is a small island fortress located approximately 6 kilometers from Zunvem in Aldona, Bardez taluka, North Goa india. It’s ‘Corjuem,’ originates from the term ‘Khor,’ meaning deep or lower as explained by the late Father Moreno de Souza.
Constructed in 1551 the Corjuem fort boasts a square shape and modest size. It’s wide walls are fortified with numerous gun ports and murder holes . Each corner of the fort features a ramp-like stairway leading to the ramparts. Inside, you will discover a well and a three-room living quarters . A relatively new addition to the fort is a small chapel.
The primary purpose of the Corjuem fort was to safeguard the Portuguese against the Marathas, Bhonsles and the Rane Rajputs during the nineteenth century.
Previously, the chapel of St. Anthony was situated within the Corjuem Fort. It is noteworthy that this fort is one of the only two surviving inland forts in Goa. Over time, the Corjuem fort has gained renown for its aesthetic charm and historical significance.
Nestled amidst lush greenery the fort offers captivating panoramic views of the neighboring picturesque villages and islands. Constructed using pitted laterite stones, the Corjuem fort showcases distinctive architectural features.
Furthermore, the fort is connected to Aldona through a cable suspension bridge, which stands as a major attraction. Notably, this bridge is the sole suspension bridge in Goa.
