Chapora Fort, Goa

The Chapora Fort located approximately 10 kilometers away from Mapusa in northern Goa and overlooks Vagator Beach. Originally known as Shahpura which means “town of Shah,” the fort was built in 1612, as a border watch post to monitor Hindu raiders during the 17th century.

It faced two sieges one in 1683 AD by Shivaji’s son Sambaji and another in 1739 AD by Bhonsle. Afterward, the Portuguese occupied the fort in 1741 AD until Goa gained independence. During the Portuguese rule the fort underwent reconstruction including the addition of underground tunnels designed to aid in escaping during a siege.

The Chapora Fort has become a highly popular tourist attraction in Goa. primarily due to its close proximity to Vagator Beach. Visitors are treated to a breathtaking panoramic view from the fort, encompassing Vagator Beach, Ozran Beach, Morjim Beach, and the mouth of the Chapora River.

Furthermore the fort’s fame skyrocketed after it was featured in the Bollywood movie (Dil Chahta Hai). The fort boasts wide walls with accessible ramparts, allowing visitors to walk around and explore. These walls are adorned with arrow slits, gun ports, and murder holes strategically placed at regular intervals.

To reach the fort – one can take a road from Mapusa and turn right two kilometers before arriving at Vagator Beach . A small road then leads to the base of the hill where the fort is perched. Alternatively tourists can choose to embark on a climb up the hill from Vagator Beach in order to reach the fort.
